Export-Mailbox fails due to "corrupted items" / old items in PST file
At the end of each year I habitually run an export of my mailbox and store it away for posterity. Since I am running on Exchange 2007 now, I of course opened a Powershell and used the Export-Mailbox command. It failed with: This mailbox exceeded the maximum number of corrupted items ...Huh? First thing I have heard about it! So I decided to investigate and learned about adding: -BadItemLimit 10000to the Export-Mailbox command ... so I did that ... and the export to .PST then ran fine ... BUT ...When I open the exported .PST file I find that it does NOT match to what I see in my mailbox using Outlook 2007. More specifically, it looks to me like it contains a whole heap of "old stuff" that I have previously deleted. I would guess that most of the stuff I am surprised to see in there is from 1-30 days old (roughly). My suspicion is that the Export-Mailbox task is also exporting the stuff that one might recover using the Tools, Recover Deleted Items function?!Q1. is that what it is doing?Q2. if it is ... how do I stop it doing that?Q3. how can I find out what the "corrupted items" are that are in my mailbox, and how do I fix them permanently?Hoping someone can shed some light on this (what seems very odd) behaviour.

... and of course, as soon as I posted the above and kept searching, I ran across this link:http://www.mail-archive.com/exchangelist@lyris.sunbelt-software.com/msg40305.htmlBEGIN QUOTE:"The Export-Mailbox cmdlet will let you export Dumpster items but only from the Deleted Items folder."I have tested this, and this is not true. The Export-Mailbox command exports the entire dumpster, no matter what. The problem is that, unlike ExMerge, you cannot specify *only* the dumpster to be exported, *and* Export-Mailbox also converts the dumpster items to regular mail items and puts them in the folder(s) they were deleted from.END QUOTEWell shave my legs and call me Smoothy! That seems to be EXACTLY what I just found. In that link above the suggested workaround was to use ExMerge again. But I was under the impression that ExMerge was deprecated and shouldn't be used?!

Hi,In exchange 2007 by default/design, Export-mailbox would export the dumpster to the specified target. The dumpster items would be converted into regular mail items and put into respective folders. In addition, I do not find an option to differentiate the items that were in the dumpster specifically. Therefore, I suggest you consider the following workaround: 1. Set Deleted Items Retension to 0 2. Run Online Maintenance to clear the dumpster items 3. Use Export-Mailbox Regarding the corrupted items, per my knowledge, there is no way to fix them permanently. Thanks, Elvis
